NEW YORK — With a simple flick of the switch, a 76-foot Norway Spruce from Connecticut (NY) became officially the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree!
On Wednesday night the new Christmas tree was illuminated in the middle of Rockefeller Plaza for the first time for the 2013 holiday season. This is a ceremony that’s been held since 1933.
The moment when the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lights up in spectacular way in the heart of New York City, it’s the most wonderful time of the year in the big apple!
Millions of people from different part of the world were watching as the tree began to shine. Emotion is the world that can describe all of this wonderful night. Kids, adults, babies, teenagers who met during this magic night are sharing love and excitement for a new holiday season.
The holiday event in midtown Manhattan also was watched by millions on television. The 81st annual tree-lighting ceremony featured musical performances by Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, the Goo Goo Dolls, Ariana Grande, Leona Lewis and Jewel. All of these artists entertained millions of people with live music.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg had the honor to turn on the lights just before 9 p.m., setting off a dazzling 45,000 multi-colored LED lights and a 9 1/2-foot-wide Swarovski star that topped the 12-ton tree.
The Swarovski Star is comprised of 25,000 crystals, with 1,000,000 facets, and it measures 9 ½ feet in diameter and 1 ½ feet deep. The Star weighs 550 pounds, including 300 pounds of crystal panels. A beauty!
The precious tree is the first Christmas gift for all the networkers and the tourist who are in NY during the week of the 2nd. The tree will be on display until Jan. 7. It’ a wonderful time to put a pair of skates on your feet and enjoy the tree from the skating rink in front of the tree.. What a view!
